crane lifting a console

Post by djgout » Mon Aug 18, 2008 7:47 am

has anyone ever had to lift a console to their second floor via crane? It looks like we're going to be in charge of doing this in a few weeks with a 40 channel tsm. these are incredibly heavy and long desks, about 1700 pounds loaded and 10 feet long. unloaded it's probably around 700 pounds. It will definitely be unloaded while on the crane.

Anyone have some advice?

We're thinking a scissor lift might work, but the weight distribution and the terrain might be a huge issue.

thanks

i thought this was gonna be about Larry putting on a kidney belt and shifting an API Legacy all by himself.

Yowsa.
I have never done this, but as a TSM owner, I should warn you to be very careful with the console as it is craned- especially while unloaded. It is pretty easy to flex the frame and getting it "true" again is nigh on impossible. This happened to my console back when it was first installed and was the source of many issues. It took a lot of work to solve. Enjoy the console- I love mine. If you ever need any advice on spare parts or general maintenance issues, feel free to pm me. Cheers,
Ryan

ps. Just re-read your post. Scissor lift? That sounds scary...

if you do try the scissor lift, just be careful and make sure that this doesn't happen!

I would make a temporary platform with several 12' long 2x4s running the long way, 3/4" plywood on top of that. Console on top of the platform. Lift the platform, not the console. If you end up hiring a crane the crane ops may have some good ideas. Or if you know anyone in the stagehands local a good rigger/staging guy could help you figure a safe method.

Hire a professional. If you have no luck in sourcing a crane op directly, contact a piano moving company. The demands on lifting a full size grand piano through a 2nd floor window are going to be similar.

What's the scenario? Like are you going from the street in through a window? How high is the second floor?

That's really not too big or heavy; a forklift could easily lift it 14'. Scissor lift - maybe. Just call a local contractor and tell them what's up.

I assume you made sure the 2nd floor can handle this type of weight?

I'd ask somebody in town who has done it before like Randy Blevins.

Adam Lasus at Fireproof did this once. Drop him a line. http://www.fireproofrecording.com/

I can't lift an API by myself, by the way. Yet.
