How to make 1/4 to XLR AES Cable?

Post by touched1 » Tue Aug 19, 2008 12:45 pm

Thanks to all who helped me with my first batch of cables. I could not have done it without your help. I am much more confident than when I started.

I now need an AES cable to go from my 1/4" patch bay (punched down from a db25 connection) to an XLR connection on my soundcard. I'd prefer not to spend money, and I have plenty of cable and connectors here already.

I am having trouble finding any sort of instructions on making AES cables. Is the wiring different? Is the gauge of the cabling different? Would a plain on balanced XLR to 1/4 TRS cable work?

The quality of the signal will not be mission critical, I will be sending the signal via toslink from the soundcard to a MacBook Pro for RTA monitoring and no more, if there are drops or hiccups it would not be the end of the world.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

No.
Yes, usually AES cable is slightly thicker, and it's "110 Ohm" cable.
Yes, for short runs (~15 feet or less).

Belden 1874A might be a good choice for the cable.

Thanks for the quick responses guys.
I got up and running with some cables I had laying around. I'll make some custom cables for the job later.
