Does Anyone Like Bomb Factory BF76

Post by dtrider » Fri Aug 22, 2008 9:57 pm

Does anybody else like the bf76 on a drum comp or anything else? I had written it off because it was the freebie plug from digi but I am thinking it sounds pretty good. It is doing something to the high end that I don't like but it's coming out pretty punchy.

It's not an "uncolored" compressor by any means. But it's useful for some stuff.

I think it is very useful. Personally, I love an 1176 and the BF76 is certainly 1176-ish. I use it all the time on guitars and vocals. Drums rooms too.

I like it on vocals. I use it on them all the time.

I'm good friends with the guy who designed the BF plugs and they are the ONLY reason I wish I used PT. Dave was really a stickler for finding the soul of the gear he was copying when he designed the stuff. Like I say I wish I had PT so I could use that stuff.

I like it as a drum bus/mono drum mic squasher. My settings are attack fully counterclockwise, release fully clockwise, ratio on 8 and adjust the input and output to suit.

That's generally how I start with drum applications as well. I don't always keep the release fully clockwise though. I back it off to match the song. Fully clockwise is too fast for some songs, imho.

Now I feel like a freak for saying I use the BF76 almost all the time on snare, kick and bass guitar.

I also drop the BF3A on vocal tracks without thinking too much, and most of the time it stays there with just a bit of tweaking. I've also started to like the BF3A on acoustic guitars.

Actually, most of the plug-ins I use on a given song will be Bomb Factory, with some Massey and PT EQ III and Dynamics III thrown in there.

I think it's just OK. It has a slightly pinched tonality, even before you start to dig in with it, and that always bugs me in a plugin. But I still find it useful for things here and there, especially when you need something with very fast compression. I use it to compress reverb returns almost exclusively, that alone makes me glad it was a freebie!

I VASTLY prefer the BF3A in "limit" mode. Way nicer sounding to me...
But like I said, the BF76 is definitely useful, I'm glad it's in there.

It's a bad example of an 1176. Misses all the depth and sweetness of the Urei Blackface units.

I am interested in hearing the Purple Audio plugs. Their hardware knock-off of the 1176 was pretty incredible sounding.

It's ok, but I vastly prefer the Purple Audio version that came with our PT system. Does that one come with LE too? It seems to do the "nuke" thing better than the regular BF- I don't notice the difference as much in more normal settings.

I end up using hardware comps when I mix but I like the BF1176 for listening purposes when I'm working on stuff at home.

Last album I mixed we compared the BF with the Purple Audio and pretty much always went with the Purple.

But, you know, it's situation dependent. Plus I don't have the Purple on the home system.

I use the BF3A on VO stuff a lot.

dtrider: don't dismiss stuff out of hand just 'cause it's a freebie.

I can't say I have a lot of options, but I use it all of the time. I've even used two in series on a vocal track.

Yes, this sounds good, but more like an LA4 than an LA3A.
