Digi003... Has ANYONE bought one?

Post by kdarr » Tue Sep 02, 2008 2:17 pm

I'm just curious... it doesn't seem to me like these are exactly flying off the shelves. Most folks seem content to stick with their 002's or even buy a used 002.

I can totally understand why, since they haven't totally locked out support for the 002 yet and the "upgrade" is pretty insignificant.

I just want to see if anyone has sprung for the new model.

Nope, still rocking the 002.

I upgraded from a 001 to a 003 through Digi. I probably would have bought a used 002 if they didnt offer the upgrade.

Waiting (3-4 years?) for the 004.

I bought one to replace my 002 because the 003 does a lot more: you can assign inserts, sends, inputs, and outputs from the surface, you can call up memory locations from the surface, save the session, change automation mode, and a bunch of other stuff. Also it has a jog/shuttle wheel, which is cheap but actually works ok. Lovely for dialog editing in post.

The only thing that it doesn't do that the 002 does do is you can't send a fader back home by holding Opt/Alt and tapping the fader. That's one of my favorite 002/Control|24 tricks that I really miss. Otherwise it's pretty awesome.

Now, if you're talking about the rack versions, I can't see why someone would go for a 003 rack over the 002 rack just for the Word Clock I/O. Although, the new Ignition Pack is much better than the old one, so if you buy a new 003 you get some better software than with an old 002.

This could be a long wait. I think they're pretty content with the 003.

Ditto here, but I only got the rack version. Even the rack version has some new features that made it better for me. Unlike the 002/001, on the 003 there is a dedicated balanced jack for EVERYTHING I/O. Second pair of speaker outs, switchable on the front. Not using up my 3/4 inputs for the stereo aux input anymore...

Just those two things made it worth it for me. I don't even really care about the word clock. Eventually I'll just get the BLA mod...
I like my 003 so far. 7.4, however, has been really strange on occasion.

That will be the same day 'ol Satan straps on his ice skates and goes for a quick spin around his front yard.

Their entire philosophy is built around supplying systems. It also has the distinct advantage of providing copy protectiion (software won't play ball without a digi box).

I should have been more specific, I have a 003r too. I like the switchable speaker outs too. Nice touch. Id also say the 003 preamps are decent too. IMO they better than how I remember the 002 pres being, and worlds better than those two mongrel pres on the 001.

Agreed on the preamps, they are pretty good. Clean and characterless of course, but pretty good. I have liked what I've gotten from them so far...
