Looking for something like a Copperphone but less...unique?

Post by Karlos the Jackal » Wed Sep 10, 2008 2:03 am

I have a Copperphone mic and I am a big fan of how my vocals sound with it. It's not just the "old-timey" sound, it's also that (and here I apologize for not knowing the lingo) my vocals sound...smoother? warmer? than with other mics, with which I tend toward brittle. (Mostly I'm speaking here of the 58, although I've tried a couple of other mics as well.)

I'd like to get a mic that has those qualities of the Copperphone but not the "old-timiness," so that I can use it on a wider variety of songs. I apologize again for not knowing quite how to put this into useful words.

I have been reading lots of threads here about the Copperphone and about other mics, and I'm wondering if a ribbon might fit the bill.

I'm home-recording digitally with either an M-Audio DMP3 or an Electro-Harmonix 12AY7 pre. I'm willing to spend a few hundred bucks.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

Heil PR30. You can use it on many other things besides voice, too.

Some Sort of ribbon. I am only experienced with the Oktava ML-52, so I'll recommend that

Those POS square microphones that come with the old consumer reel-to-reel decks are kind of fun. I have a Wollensak mic like this, though it is a bit "old timey". I think it is a crystal mic. You can find these for pretty cheap money and are worth having around for fun. I have found it to be tough getting enough gain to drive the signal, though I think this is some kind impedance/interface issue.

It's probably out of your budget, but I think this may fit the bill too...

Also...they're not that different sounding, but you may want to consider one of the old EV dynamic mics. I have an RE11 that does have that sort of 'vibe' to it.
