Depends.

On alot of things, I favor it because it's usually lost. This is the kind of thing that as you're listening to your system from across the room, it becomes apparent.

Qualitatively listening for it and creating it, gives you a taller mix.

To my students I recommend they think in terms of a 'Mix Axis'.

X being frequency response 20Hz to 20KHz
Y being stereo spread Left<----->Right image
Z being front to back

Most have responded that lower frequency bass content creates 'depth' (subjective term) in a mix.

did you guys have those mics in omni or cardioid? just curious. i usually have earthworks omnis on the floor about 6' out, lined up with the kick drum legs, and i get a lot of the kick sound from those mics...

first of all keep the front head ON and tune properly (doh!). put a d112 on the inside~beater, put a nice 10" DIY subkick on front. ribbon mic's for room and overheads.
if you have a pretty decent sounding room, the ribbon's will rock your world!
