Looks like the finish is starting to flake off. Sometimes the final layer is very thin and goes first.

Is there any chance that it may have been refinished at any point in its life?

Did this happen in the past and someone covered it up with wax/some other finish?

as funny and crazy as this may sound.... looks as if someone took a spray bottle filled with bleach to it. looks as if it was exposed to some type of chemical. i have never seen that on a martin. they use the same type of finish and have been for many years....

I had the dreadnought version, which I sold to friend (who's played it very vigorously in the ~5 years since). That's not normal wear--these satin-finished 'hog Martins actually start to get shinier with frequent contact.

Are there any weird spots on the inside?
