Question about capacitors.

Post by phantom power » Thu Oct 02, 2008 11:26 pm

When someone refers to a capacitor type as being a "bead", what are they talking about?

Um, beads are usually inductors, not capacitors. (See also: ferrite bead)

Can you provide more context?

Maybe it means:

1 x 0.1uF 63v with beads

Have you seen pics of the build? Is there a cap in there with beads on its leads between the disk and the PCB?

Tantalum beads, or dipped tantalum caps.

Yep he could be refering to the ones that look like little beads.

Preamp Card Pic

2nd pic down shows 2 different configurations of the pre. You can see the 2 little yellow caps toward the middle of the board. These are the ones.

The oic is small, but I thought it might help anyway.

Is there a difference between regular tant caps and "dipped"? I guess whaty I'm really asking is; can I just use a couple of 63v tantalums?

Thanks for the replies thus far.

Those appear to be small mono ceramic psu bypass caps for the opamp. They are probably .1 uf, but I didn't examine the parts list.

Many caps are dipped construction, this includes silver micas, cheap green mylar "chicklets" from Japan, dipped film caps from other far east manufacturers, mono ceramic and dipped tantalums. Dipped construction where the cap is dipped in an epoxy coating is about the only thing these caps have in common, their interior construction is completely different.

Those are the standard sort of 0.1 uF ceramic cap in a through-hole package with pins on 100 mil centers. I have a big bag full of them here ... literally a lifetime supply. Any decent ceramic cap (X7R, NP0) will do ya fine.

I've never heard anyone refer to them as a "bead," although that's kinda what they look like. As Jim Williams notes, there are tantalum electrolytics that look like larger versions of these ceramics.
