Boston area tape machine tech?

Post by Rodgre » Tue Oct 07, 2008 10:05 am

I have a friend who is looking to have his Tascam MSR-16 1/2" 16 track machine calibrated and generally gone through.

I've never had an anlog machine serviced, so I don't know who to suggest he take it to. I know of Alactronics, but that's really the only repair facility that I would think of taking it to.

Does anyone have anyone else they trust?

Thanks

Roger

Rog,

You gotta go spend some quality time with Vince at Audiopro in Watertown. He's a mad scientist, does really good work.

Wait a minute, I didn't know you have friends besides me.

Thanks guys. Yes, Corin, I have friends besides you. Just none as talented, handsome and witty as you.

ah vince....my favorite moment with him: i'm in there buying some headphones, he is expounding at length about...something...how the behringer composer is a better compressor than an 1176...something like that. anyway, the conversation turns to mics. he picks up a copy of tapeop, flips it open, on the inside front cover is an ad for the AT3060 with a bunch of quotes from reviewers. he says "now this mic, this is a shit mic. none of these people know what they're talking about."

i didn't mention that one of the quotes was mine. :D

Vince is... well... uh, everyone's got a "Vince story."

Hehehe...Vince also told me his Behringer ideas, then he tried to sell me a modded one for about $1200. But the dude is definitely passionate about his stuff...

+1 on Aztech. Now THOSE guys I like talking to. Sort of like the two old codgers from Sesame Street, who sat up in the balcony and bickered with each other. Except these guys bicker about electronics, they know their stuff, and they do real good, honest work; they actually recommended I throw in the towel on resurrecting an old 1/2" machine I got, saying I'd be paying them too much money to have the thing working.

That sounds about right. I distinctly recall trying to jut pay my bill and get my Otari 1/2" out of there and him just raving about a mod he could do on a muti-effects unit that would duplicate the bucket brigade effect allowing me to get the 80's Alan Holdsworth tone. Mind you, i never in a million years asked how I could get said sound, but i got really caught up in his enthusiasm.
