Beyer M260 wtf!?

Post by Fakiekid » Tue Oct 28, 2008 6:43 am

So i used to own a Beyer M260. About 6 weeks ago I found it in the bottom of the mic drawer in pretty bad nick, so i sent it back to beyer!

Beyer kindly threw it in the bin because I didn't let them know i wanted it back but anyway! I brought a new one from DV247 as my original dealer doesn't get the same discount or w/e?

My old M260 was similar in size to a 58 (grill size), now this one is sooo tiny! Have they reallly gone this much down in size?

I also didnt recieve any windshield or mic clip like ive done with other beyer products and it also came in an unpadded bag for the nice UPS guy to be throwing about!

Not too sure on the goings on!

Nice mic though!

So they didn't realize that you actually wanted the mic returned...

Weirdos.

i would make a big deal out of it, let them know you're pissed and expected your mic back and repaired.

That looks more like a 160 than a 260.

I guess it doesn't quite look like either. The 160 contours in before the grill. (Not that I'm a Beyer expert in any sense).

It looks like any new Beyer M260 that I've seen so far. The old grey ones from the '70s were probably a bit bigger.

The new ones are very, very small. They look pretty weird. The old ones look like this:

New ones, however, look like the grill is half that size.

And now to the ensuing "The old ones sound better than the new ones" posts, followed by the "vintage" 260s selling for twice the price of the new ones

I've had 2 old m260's for a few years now. This year I bought a M130 and M160 pair and I laughed pretty hard when they arrived and I saw how tiny they are. From all the photos I just assumed they were the same size as the older m260's. These are like mini-mes.

The m160's have a different grill than what that 260 of yours shows. The banding on the grill does not say beyerdynamic on it, and the body contour beneath the grill is also different, as Jon mentioned.

FWIW, I've found Beyer USA service to be very good. Pricey, but good.

I had a relatively new 160 give up on me, and when I sent it in for warranty service, I got a completely different unit back. It also had no serial # plate. So I have a nice individual paper plot for my blown original mic, and a completely unrelated factory replacement mic with no documentation. Strange, but at least they took care of it!

Um, That's *utterly* crazy IMHO. Is someone there actually arguing that people send their mics in to beyer to be tossed away?? I'd want some compensation immediately...

"Robert,

Our standard repair procedure is dispose of the product if the customer doesn?t want it repaired, and is not willing to pay the return carriage.

Unfortunately this has happened, and the product has been disposed of accordingly."

my reply,

they did offer me one at trade price though! even though it was more expensive than DV247 was retailing them at
