Recording Accordian (key clicking)
Recording Accordian (key clicking)
I'm recording an album for a great band at the moment and today we were attempting some accordian parts. The singer who played them is by no means an accomplished accordian player and so due to performance issues we agreed to put off recording the accordian for a couple of weeks until his brother (who is a great player) can come and play the parts at another studio.
However, one things that was really bugging me was the amount of clicking I was getting from the sound of the keys being pressed.
I tried various mic choices/placements, and was relatively happy with a schoeps cmc6u and u87 in MS (the part is on it's own with some chanty vox and so needs a little width) but I could not find any satisfactory way to minimize click sound. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I recently did some tracks of a concertina while we were set up for capturing vocal demos during a rehearsal. I was making an attempt at the run-the-mix-through-the-"mains"-in-mono-with-one-side-wired-out-of-phase trick, so we were just tracking with a sm57. We needed to sketch out the concertina part for future reference and I just put the 57 on the bellows, about 12" away. It actually sounded great. Later, when we went to track, I did a MS setup with 2 414's setup about 7' away. But I also set up a close 57 again. It was nice because we did two different layers and I used the 57 for the lead and the MS for the harmony.
Prog out with your cog out.

Getting the right spot with any instrument with bellows can be hard. I find I have my best luck with accordion just doing what you're probably already doing: moving the mic around until you find the perfect spot (and it's anyone's guess where that'll be), then beg the accordion player not to move an inch .
Keep in mind that how much clicking is coming through has as most to do with the quality/shape of the instrument and how the player plays it. You might be automatically in better shape when the "ringer" comes in in a couple of weeks, just based on his superior technique.

That's my hope; fingers crossed.DrummerMan wrote: Keep in mind that how much clicking is coming through has as most to do with the quality/shape of the instrument and how the player plays it. Also, what's the nature of the keyclick? Is it possible that the end of the key is hitting something when fully depressed?
I had a Magnus chord organ that had a terrible click when you depressed a key. The noise was from the end of the key hitting the organ frame when it was fully depressed. Little bit of a felt strip under the end of the keys fixed that...
