Cool to watch some work. That drummer seems pretty solid. Were those overheads in ORTF?

Was that mute on the floor tom just a wad of masking tape? Never tried that.

The "jumper" on the floor is an old trick. I learned it from some guy in the early 90's. It is a napkin with some change in it, and it is like a gate, as it lets full sound through and then "closes" down the ring. It doesnt sound muffled to the mic, but it doesnt ring sympathetically because of the kick that way. I do that a lot. it makes the toms sound very wide open without all the ringing during the kick /snare /hat sections.
The OH I usually use is a pair of M49's, but I didnt want to fly with them, so I brought my pair of original Stapes (avenson) omni's and put them on an X/Y bar. thats all. I love those little things. i had forgotten how great they are until I put them up for that session.
A big part of the drum sound was the Bova Ball I put in the stone hallway, though. and that isnt in may of the pictures because it was out there...

joel, do you do anything with the bottom head on the floor tom or does muting the top take care of it?

Sometimes. Usually the "jumper" mute is heavy enough that the aftershock of the bottom head is nice when played, but it is inconsequential to the mic because the top head is so choked at rest.

You got me, man... that was what some other dude from there said. They were asking about "the loudness wars" and I told them basically what Calbi had said about the invention of the 5 disc CD changer being the beginning of the competition between records for the "loudest", because before that you would ust put on 1 record and set the volume where you wanted it. Then I said that now with iTunes, you have like 15,000 songs all "competing" for attention....
The rest is crazy talk about making history by helping a national act of Colombia "go Global" by using a "famous" producer from New York... wow. I dont even know what to feel when I read that.

These guys will be playing at SXSW if anyone is going to be in Austin then.
We are mixing the new record in January here in Brooklyn.
They are great guys.

Hey Joel, in the videos I noticed the doghouse built around the bass drum and I was wondering, how does that affect the room mic'd sound? I usually get a bunch of the low end from the room mics, if you build a bass drum tunnel does that change the type of sounds your gettign from your room mics for the drums?

Maybe a better question would be; what do you try to capture in the room mics when you track drums?
[Asked whether his shades are prescription or just to look cool]
Guy: Well, I am the drummer.
