Tascam 488 mk II problem: strange hum/rattle

It sounds like a little motor or fan is going off inside the front of the machine. It's the first time its ever happened and I bought the unit used in February. Anybody with any knowledge of how these machines are put together have any idea?..........it does not sound good.....


Update: the noise appears to be gone but now I can only get playback in the right channel of my headphones.......yay.....
