Quality bulk microphone cable??

Post by Jettison » Thu Dec 04, 2008 7:43 pm

Just wondering where one might find good deals on quality bulk mic cable.
And what are the differences between brands.
Obviously Mogami, Canare, Monster are well known quality cables.
Any other names I should be aware of.
I've seen GLS (cheap) on ebay. They any good?

I've purchased Canare from www.markertek.com and I'm very happy with it, you can also compare on www.redco.com . I wouldn't touch monster cable, everything else on your list is good ( not sure about the ebay stuff) , I've also heard Gepco and Beldin is good but I have never used them.

I've used the Redco cable and been happy with it.
Price is pretty reasonable.

I second the Gepco for decent, cheap, and flexible multi pairs and such. I use Canare star quad for single runs at the moment but the 4 conductors is probably unecessary. Another popular one that wasnt mentioned is Belden. I use full compass (fullcompass.com) for buying cable spools.

Belden 1800F. Microphone, line-level, AES/EBU. High-flex, top-quality, reasonably priced.

In a pinch, the quad Mogami stuff (that Guitar Centers sell sometimes, on a big reel) sounds way better than your typical cheap-ass premade mic cable.

I like the Canare stuff too, but I got mine through Full Compass. That being said, when I bought it, it was cheaper to buy a reel in by the foot versus by the reel, so keep that in mind.

FWIW, I prefer the Belden 1192a matte finish to the Canare slight gloss feel. I usually get a couple hundred feet of star quad from one or the other spool. Great stuff!

I'd love to hear some thoughts on this. I know it's bee discussed before but...

Personally, I feel a little embarrassed and self conscious to have a bunch of cheap-ass cables all over my studio. (although I do use my nicest ones for overdubs and what not)
Is there really a NOTICEABLE difference if both cables pass signal?

Why don't you tell us... is there? have you ever noticed it?

I've noticed problems with the really, really shitty wire I've had the misfortune to use. Other than that it's all pretty standard belden/gepco/redco stuff in my space. I also have a few lines of canare star-quad, mogami and monster. It all sounds the same to me except the monster cables are all a little microphonic.

They look the same on the scope too. ;)

But I believe I can hear the difference between good wire and really really really bad wire... so I try to get good wire but I don't sweat it.
Everything louder than everything else.
