Put them both up there and see what happens!

I'd personally go for the RE20.

Or put the RE20 in the kick and use the D12 for the floor tom.

I just recorded drums for my friends' next record. Here is what we used:

Jeff - any raw drum tracks you can post - I'd love to hear your configuration...

Do a little pre test today and try them both out on just the floor tom. I can't recommend either because I pretty much use Oktava 012's exclusively for toms... and I don't own those mics..

Can't. I just engineered the basics, and my job is done. I'll ask Mike for some RAW tracks after the holidaze and see if I can post some stuff, though.

Put one up. If it doesn't sound good, put the other one up. If it doesn't sound good, start over by retuning or placing the mics elsewhere. That's what I'd do.

hey brad i'm really not trying to be a jerk, although i'm sure i sound like one, but...

what is the point of asking a bunch of anonymous strangers (whose tastes you have no idea of) which mic to use in a certain situation, when none of us have any idea:
what kind of drum
what size
what heads are on it
how they're tuned
what the room is like
where the drums are in the room
how the drummer is hitting them
what style of music
what role the drums play in the arrangement
how you like things to sound
how the band likes things to sound
etc

and even if we DID know all that stuff, and you DID know what our tastes are, in the time it took to write the initial post and then check back to see if anyone replied you could've easily just put both mics on the drum, recorded a bit, and then made a choice based on how YOU felt they sounded on playback. just like a billion people did before they had the 'benefit' of teh interwebs.

If you're doing a Glynn Johns setup, you really shouldn't need a floor tom mic (or any tom mic). But I'd try both and see which one sounds better not just by itself but with the other mics open.

As has been stated by many other people, try different techniques, but i would say that would be my 'go to method'
