The craziest plugs you know of...

Post by joel hamilton » Sat Jan 17, 2009 8:05 am

I really love plugins for doing things that simply do not exist in the analog domain.
what would be the most "out there" plugs you know of.
I would love to compile a list here of super crazy stuff.
Personally, I need stuff for mac/rtas or TDM. VST for mac will work via the FXpansion adaptor, but i would rather RTAS or TDM, of course.
Please post the OS if you are adding suggestions!!!
Whats the weirdest one you know of? A gleetchplug thing? a Pluggo thing?
I need some new weirdo plugs....

Maybe not the absolute craziest thing going, but the Ohm Force stuff is really, really fun. I love the Ohm Boys delay - you can get some really cool harmonic and LFO stuff happening. They've got a free filter plug called Frohmage which is also really fun.

Drum loops. Turn the verb and delay down, then tweak from there.

Reaktor 5. Not just cool audio-destruction effects, but very unique GUI's. I use the sample-transformer stuff all the time. And Gaugear. And Newscool. And Steampipe. And Lurker. And Massive. I keep telling myself that I'm going to find excuses to use Skrewell and Spacedrone, 'cause they're so freakin sweet.

Its also the ultimate DIY plugin. You can build your own stuff from scratch or mod out the presets. They've added a Macro layer in version 5 that makes it a lot easier to design and mod stuff using pre-set objects instead of having to do everything from the ground up. And there's a giant online library of user-generated content.

Here's an overview:
http://www.native-instruments.com/index ... ibrary&L=1

There is also the entire Reaktor 4 library that gets thrown in for free. The Grainstates instrument is outstanding.
Prog out with your cog out.

the cycling 74 plugs are totally weird and abstract. unfortunately they don't play well with my 1-core 2003-era PC.

They also do not live together well with certain other plugins I use all the time. We have the whole pluggo bundle, but they wreak havoc with some other companies' stuff.

Glitch is the coolest "out there" plug in I have and its free. Unfortunately for you Joel it's VST only.

http://illformed.org/plugins/glitch/

Scroll down and there is a video of the plug in action. It is so great and you can sync it so it always gives the same results (but who wants that?) or you can make the effect random so it always renders a different effects each time. The tape stop, reverse and stretcher are all super cool. You can program exactly what sequence you want what effect. It's super deep, but you can literally just throw it up and get cool sounds right off the bat.

I know that plug. it is AWESOME, but I am on a MAC. VST isnt the bummer, PC is the bummer. (for me, not for people with PC's, so dont get all uppity windowze peeps.. ;) )

That plug is seriously killer. We used it on a serious major label ( for island/ universal) record that I produced and co / produced with Stuart price.
Totally great.
Please make a MAC VERSION PEOPLE THAT MAKE "GLITCH" !!!!!! Please!!!

Here's some odd ones:

Lorenz Attractor sound generator:
LiteOn has a very cool JesuSonic plugin package for Reaper. Among some cool filters, he has includes has a bizarre sound-generator. The sounds are generated by a Lorenz attractor. Discussed about 1/4 of the way down on the following link. Great random sci-fi sounds. Reaper only at the moment, I afraid, not sure though.

http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=27764&page=2

Zany Reverb Imulses.

Based apparently on some "atomic level modeling at the phonon level" (that could just be BS, who cares, they sound really cool, especially for dub stuff). You'll need a Impulse Response player to use them (SIR is a good free one, or you can use the Reaverb Impulse player in Reaper). There are also example sound samples on the page, and other links to other spring reverb/dub Impulses.

I haven't tried them all, but have used LiveCut on some stuff. Glitch heaven.

Also,

These great too, especially the Vogue and Effectrix, but I have them all (except this new Consquence thingy) and they are really excellent.

"spectral monkeyage" is my favourite FSU plugin (how can you resist with a name like that?)

it's free, but i think maybe only vst/windoze.

I love the KTGranulator:

http://koen.smartelectronix.com/KTGranulator/

It's VST and AU, I think both mac and windows. It's based on the granulator that's part of audiomulch (an amazing piece of software that I wish was available on mac) and you can get some completely insane sounds with it, especially if you have a couple of them in series with some other modulation/delay in between.
