I prefer vocals that are sung in tune. Or if screamed/rapped, atleast... done 'in the key'. Bob Dylan sang whatever-the-fuck note he wanted, and it worked for him. It's all subjective. Some singers have good 'tone' so they can go flat or sharp and it still sounds alright. Like, for me, Rivers Cuomo.

As for instruments, Helmet's "Meantime" album is noticeably out of tune, but i think it adds personality to their sound.

I work mostly on younger power-pop/rock/pop-punk bands who want a tighter/'polished' sound, so I have them tune their guitars/basses before every take. It all depends on the song.
