I'm about to start building some portable bass traps / gobos tonight, 2' x' 4' x 4" of rigid fiberglass (two 2" panels), framed with cabinet-grade plywood.
My question for the TOMB is since my panels have foil on one side, will having the two foiled sides facing in the middle be much different sonically than somehow peeling off the foil facing?
My hunch is that the inner-foil layer might help in their gobo usage yet mitigate a little bit of their effectiveness as bass traps.
Any insights?

I wouldn't remove the foil mostly because I think it would get really messy. I'd layer the pieces so that one side has the foil facing out, so you end up with one side with foil and one without. That will give you some added versatility. I've also heard that leaving an air gap between the two panels will help absorb the extreme low end.
Leaving the FRK on the front part of the panel (the part facing into the room) will have 2 effects. First, it will increase absorption at lower frequencies, second, it will give some reflectivity at higher frequencies.
For Gobos, I'd personally not use the FRK. I'd build the gobos with the FRK facing inward on both sides, and put a piece of plywood between them. This way, it's a gobo, it will block sound and also be absorptive on both sides.
For Bass Traps, I'd put the FRK outward, and not use plywood between the layers of fiberglass.

Thanks for the input!
I'm using these to hopefully serve a dual purpose -- to work as bass traps in the corners of the room, and also to serve as gobo screens. Since I'm building four of them, I think I just might build two each way for flexibility and/or experimentation.
So glad to hear I don't need to make a mess of removing the FRK!
