Gong, for plate reverb??!

Post by losthighway » Fri Jan 23, 2009 4:14 pm

File this under hair brain schemes:

My old roomy had a way of collecting tons of drum and percussion stuff. Now he's moving to NY in a VW Golf, so---- he's been leaving a lot behind. There's a big Zildian gong that's been sitting in the practice space/live room, and I was noticing how much/long it has sympathetic vibration to loud sounds in the room.

Anyone see a chance in hell, if he leaves it, that I could rig it up with a speaker and a contact mic to use it as a small plate reverb?

don't install a driver, just put a contact pickup or two and stick the gong in front of the source. this way you won't ruin the gong by drilling.

Yeah, I figure it might be an odd enough sound that it will just go on the right vocal on the right song, or the room mic on the drums. Not an every project type of thing. Maybe I'll just slap a contact mic on and put it in front of a guitar amp taking signal from the mixing desk and see what happens.

Low cost.

That could be really cool. remember, a gong takes a long time to build up energy, so your verb will probably sound a lot different on a cold gong that one that's warmed up. Post samples!
