Ampex 445

Post by reckless_astro » Mon Feb 02, 2009 5:01 pm

Hi all,

I've had an Ampex 445 transport kicking around for awhile. I don't know much about these machines, but I've gathered that the 445 was sold as a playback only unit. Wondering if it can be converted to a recording machine w/ the right heads, etc. Anyone??

Thanks,

Justin

Absolutely, yes it can be converted. You just need:
* A 440 head assembly
* More head cables, or get the cable box and cables from a 440
* To replace your 445 audio channels with 440 channels.
* Control cables from transport to each electronic channel

You now have a 440!

Before you buy the audio channels you'll need to know which ones to get (440, 440B or 440C). The first two are interchangeable, but the last is not. Look on recordist.com for Tom Fine's EXCELLENT piece on how to recognize the different versions.

You can sell your 445 channels on ebay, there are people who want them.

Good luck

Nice! I'll keep an eye on ebay. Thanks for the reply --
