PSU recapping

Post by paulrichards7 » Thu Feb 05, 2009 8:19 pm

So Im gonna recap my PSU
http://i390.photobucket.com/albums/oo34 ... /PSU-1.jpg
Should I double the size of caps, but keep the same voltage?
Ive heard that PSU caps are severely underated

What about those green chicklet caps?

I also think Im probably gonna disconnect the phantom power supply to the channel boards
That should buy me some extra juice

Any other mods while Im in there?
Thanks
Paul

Other way round. You want to keep the same farad value of the caps. The voltage rating you can feel free to increase. (The voltage is the rated tolerance of the cap before it starts to release the magic smoke.)

In this particular case, using a slightly greater capacitance than specified isn't going to hurt anything (might affect start up time a little but nothing major). I would measure the lead spacing and size and match that instead, making sure you at least meet that voltage/capacitance. It will make replacing them easiest. There are cases were matching the capacitance would matter, but these are just DC filter caps.

The chicklets are most likely fine and will be that way for a long time. I personally would leave them be.
