I've done close dynamics along with heavily compressed, sometimes delayed, room mics (omnis).

Anyone know what they did on "We Will Rock You"? I was trying to get something like that on a past recording project (failed).

Yes, this is one recording mystery that takes time to figure out. It still evades complete explanation, but there are def ways to get the old clapping sound. I find sitting and slapping your knees often works better than clapping. Try one track of knee-slappin goodness, and then a few more tracks of slapping on different parts of your leg, to get a good variety of sounds. I put the mic kinda far back, even in a small room, and compress the clap tracks just enough so there's a nice tight room reverb. Boom~!

We Will Rock You used people on bleachers, like at a school sports event.

Take a listen to this (the first track on that page, BoomKrak).

It's one pass of stomping and clapping, AT 4033 with an overloaded audiobuddy. I duplicated the track and slid it over a little bit, panned and EQ'd them opposite, and gave the later one a little verb. I did it in Tracktion, If you'd like to see the file.

I like the result. I've since recorded some terrible claps, but no stomps.

What about procuring a couple of wooden shipping pallets and stomping on those? You don't have a wood floor, but maybe just the "boots on wood" sound is enough. Never tried it myself, but maybe it's worth a shot.

As for the claps, don't forget the tried-and-true method of "drumstick on phone book" to get a little extra bass in there with the regular handclaps.

If you have a wood drum riser toss a 58 under it and compress the shit out of it. Oooh and for claps smack 2 2-3 foot boards or 2X4s together, good loud smacks that make your ears ring.

I put a guy on my wooden staircase at my house, and put a big ol flappy marching drum at the bottom of the staircase and used one mic pulled back far enough to catch the low resonance of the drum and the stomp of the foot. it worked great for that situation.
