Hi
sorry for being MIA - got busy there for a while
As far as more music goes - anyone willing to host should hit me with a pm and lets work something out
Don't know if you guys know the story of Joe Gibbs - more than a technical genius he was/is a business genius.. With the result that it was hard to find his material released in those "anthologies" of reggae music. Which was sort of like releasing an anthology of R and B without Motown records.
He licensed the material he owned in a very limited fashion. The Closest was "Joe Gibbs and Errol T - The Mighty Two" which did not have his biggest hits.
I am happy to say I have finally seen an anthology with the original Joe Gibbs material and has all the hits . I would recommend this for anyone looking to for this kind of reggae.

trevord most respect.
thanks for sharing the knowledge and system recording. big youth, u-roy, michigan and smiley forever. I would love to hear those tapes and learn more about those yard parties/clashes. I have a lot of dub plates from that era.

I've got to recommend this music blog for tracking down the more obscure reggae stuff (including 7 Joe Gibbs releases):

Just as an aside: I have 2 Phase Linear amps and love the snots out of them. Great stuff.

Bumping this thread *just in case* TrevorD happens to see it and wants to upload more live soundclash recordings from the early 1980s...
I've cobbled together a system that is maybe a slightly less "smiley face EQ" version of the systems described upthread. I'm really fond of old Richard Long (Paradise Garage sound system designer) stuff, mainly his crossover that "doubles" the bass and tweeter parts instead of completely separating them. To me it sounds more natural that way.
Here's a pic of a modern reissue of this crossover. (Don't be fooled by its simplicity. It's very powerful in a Sound System situation.)
Finally, the reason I reposted: to ask about Stereo Imaging with a system like this. I've been running everything in Mono, but I was considering switching everything but the Sub-Bass to Stereo. Does anybody have experience with this kind of thing? What are some strengths and weaknesses of this approach?
Thanks for any thoughts,
rs

Wow! I can't believe I missed this (twice!). Cool runnins' TrevorD.
GREAT stories. I'll have to check-out the mixes later. I am both a (roots) Reggae fan, and a teacher that presents a course called "H3: The History of Hip-Hop," so I found this material fascinating.
I always thought that the "selector," "DJ," and "sound-system man" were one and the same/inter-changeable...
Anyone know where TrevorD is now?

Growing up, I knew this dude (guitar player) who had a Phase Linear and a pair of JBL monitors (15" 3-ways) for his stereo. He wouldn't go longer than 7 feet of 12 ga for his speaker wires. He was always talking and showing me how badass his stereo was. This thread got me jonesing for a Phase Linear all over again back when it was fresh. I probably spent 2 hours on eBay. Something about an amp that can drive a short just speaks to me. You probably know him Gregg. I bet he still has that amp.

Hmmm...
Alex? Sounds about right, but he was a bass player.
Jimmy? Too poor; perpetual student.
Paul? Could be, although he didn't brag much about anything (but he did walk around with a set of headphones and metronome playing odd-time clicks in his ears all the time).
Steve? Into Neil Young guitar solos?
Do I win? Do I win????
