Hihats neither play melody or create harmony...

If you listen to jazz that is trying to move the art forward (as opposed to playing at restaurants doing "All the things you are") the strict hihat 2 and 4 becomes less important every day.

I can usually tell a pair of 13" hats without even paying attention to the music being played. That to me is not good. The first thing I hear should NOT be the hats unless the song starts or ends with just hats.

Guys,
i'm not gonna fight the hat content, im gonna embrace.

I went to guitar center.

hit a LOT of hats....

Most i disliked, most gave me some of the things I don't like in my Dyno Beats.

I was kinda into the Paiste Twentys, but then pulled out the Zildjian 13" hats... THERE is the sound.

No bong, just nice tasteful sizzle.

i think they're actually 13.25" ;)

Those are the hats I keep at home. I'm not a drummer (not even remotely) but I wanted a good pair of versatile hats that could come in handy if/when I needed them. I tried a bunch of 14's at a couple of local places, but kept coming back to these.
If you really wanna make Drumsound happy, record your drum tracks with 13" Paistes and pan the snare waaaaay over in the mix.

I'm not getting it, is it the note of the smaller dimension?

What are you hearing specifically, they jump out too much?

I do need to play the hybrid customs in a kit to see how the jive

I heard some 12" hats that were pretty cool too. ;)

It is a pitch tonality thing for sure. They don't seem to 'work' in a set or in music to my ears. I also hate hihat mic sand most newer and/or heavy hats. I want the eigth note there but not taking over. I want the drive to come from the snare. It's totally a personal thing and I'm using the board to try to reach the masses...

Anything that distracts me and isn't meant as a distraction really bugs me.

I'm the same way about reverb...[/i]

Oh, I forgot. On my drum mixing technique described above, gate the shit out of the snare and pipe it, full blast, through your Lexicon.

YES! I used to own those, and I LOVED them! Granted, that was before I was very into recording, but boy did I love their sound. Just the right amount of "chunck" when you close them with your foot, they weren't super bright and ear-piercing.

Maybe we should have a contest where we all record some music using 13" hats and try to get a sound that Tony is ok with...

They are very interesting hats... nothing at GC sounded quite like them.

i think the ribbed edge on the bottom hat eliminates some "tuned chamber" sound and makes the contact point "sound better"

Tony, why not check 'em out?

These ARE the ones where one hat is a Z and one is a K, correct?
