Just got an M160, where would you use on drums
So I just received my brand new M160 yesterday. Looking forward to getting into it with electric/acoustic guitars, etc. but was curious on how you like to use it on drums.
I only have one (so no stereo overhead or M/S suggestions) where do you get good mileage out of an M160 in drum recordings? Thanks.
Here's what I'm using on drums now as a guide:
Kick in: Senn E602
Kick out: Soundeluxe U195
SN top: Beyer M210
SN btm: Oktava mk12
Toms: Audix D2 x2
Stereo OH: At 40407 x2
Hi hat: Oktava mk12

i love that mic about 4 or 5 feet in front of the kit, maybe 2 feet off the ground, a few feet over towards the floor tom side, so it is kind of aiming between the floor tom and the kick... like it's looking through at the drummer's shin.
hope that makes sense.
sound good with some compression, but it is also good dry.
depends on the set, room, drummer, but that is a regular favourite for me.

+1 on this - totally - with compression on the insert if you have inserts.toaster3000 wrote:i love that mic about 4 or 5 feet in front of the kit, maybe 2 feet off the ground, a few feet over towards the floor tom side, so it is kind of aiming between the floor tom and the kick... like it's looking through at the drummer's shin.

i really it 1-2 feet in front of the kick, dead center, about snare height. or as a mono overhead. or as a side mic on snare if i'm not wailing on the thing. nice on rack tom as well. also good as a room mic....
i could make a whole record with only 160s. it would sound kinda weird, but it'd be easy on the ears, that's for sure.
