Upgrading MacPro system

Post by jessejamietig » Sun Mar 01, 2009 5:07 pm

I'm going to upgrade my MacPro to ProTools 8.

The computer is a 2.66 dual processor MacPro currently running OS X 10.4.9.
I want to upgrade to 10.5.4 and my MacBook has that system software with it.

I can't seem to find the software anywhere else, so the question I'm asking is
will the system disk I got with the MacBook work with my MacPro?

Thanks in advance,

Jesse

Most likely not, as the bundled install software is usually for the specific machine. Check the disc and see if it says for Macbook Pro only.

No, it won't work. The discs that come with Macs are specific to those machines. It wouldn't even work on a MacBook Pro or an older generation MacBook. You'll need to get your hands on a retail copy of Leopard.

Where can I get my hands on a copy of OS X 10.5.4 or earlier?

Boot your MacPro in FireWire Target Disk Mode, and connect it to your MacBook. Put the MacBook system disk in the MacBook, and choose to install the system on the MacPro hard drive.

Have you ever gotten that to work? I've tried before and never could.

edit: If I remember correctly I couldn't see the optical drive of the target disk machine, just its hard drive contents.

Ahhh... Can you use Carbon Copy Cloner to create a boot drive between two computers? I've been able to do that on two drives in my G5.

I think that the MBP install is simply that. For $80 you could have a copy of 10.5 via ebay and upgrade it for free via Apple's website.

I have yet another question. I looked at the system restore disk from my macbook, and the only thing it said on it is "For Mac Computers". I have 4 drives in my computer, so I might just try install it on one of the other drives and see what happens.

Thanks,
JZ

You don't use the optical drive of the target disk computer -- in this case, he uses the MacBook, and then installs on the MacPro disk which connected by FW target disk mode.

It has worked for me before.

Boot the MacBook with the system disk by holding down c at boot up. Try having the MacPro up and connected before you boot.

Ah, I see what you're saying. I had it backwards.
