Ampex 3200 high speed duplicator?

Post by decocco » Tue Mar 03, 2009 8:15 am

Does anyone have any experience with Ampex 3200 high speed duplicators? Can I use one as a normal 2-track machine to print my mixes to? Do they even record at 15 ips? I've been searching the interweb to no avail.

I don't have one of these, but as is, you most likely cannot run it at 15 ips, and even if you could force it to that speed (varispeed, etc.) the EQ curve will not be correct, so pretty extensive modification would probably be required to use one of these as a "normal" tape machine.

I'm pretty sure somebody brings this up every so often on the ampex discussion list, so if you feel like joining you could search their archives or post the question to the list. I'm sure you'll get a number of replies.

Thanks for the info. I'll check out the Ampex group.
