there is a video of pearl jam doing the song "do the evolution" (my fav pearl jam song) on youtube live and the drummer has a trash can lid as a cymbal.
anyone know what that is all about?

another metal guitar tip is to put a fan in front of you while you play, so it blows your stupid long hair around like the solo is BLOWING YOU AWAY because you're a fucking tool.

One of the first things I ever recorded for somebody was a '45 for a great band call The Mistreaters many years ago. The song i recorded was "Stranded" and can be heard here

The drummer used a trash can lid for a cymabal. It really fit their style. I don't think it was a great recording job that I did on a 4 track yamaha mini disc recorder, but it fit the music as well. I still have and use the yamaha 8 track mini disc recorder I have as a on the road on the fly kind of recorder. It has held up nicely as a piece of gear.

Perhaps they were just trying to emulate the cymbal sound from Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home."
"Jeweller, you've failed. Jeweller."

Hells yes!. And half a 55 gal drum as a kick, my brother. Cheap thin stainless pots for rack toms, and an enameled steel bedpan for a snare. We rock the junkyard drums HARD when we want to...
I liked the sound of a big crappy 20" ride turned inside out better than the trash can lid, but for looks, the lid is better.

I thought this club was for musicians. Who let the drummer in here??

I read somewhere that Iggy Pop was a drummer before he was in the Stooges and that he used a steel trash can as a kick drum. I could see how you could mount a kick pedal on that little metal lip that goes around the bottom. I think he said he used a wooden beater too.
For years I would always have a cymbal in my rig that I called my trash can lid. It was usually a crash cymbal with a broken up crash cymbal on top of it, upside down. I would space the two cymbals apart with felt washers until I got the decay profile that I was looking for. As the broken cymbal deteriorated I'd sometimes have to adjust or replace.
I'm really bummed because my Paiste signature crash that used to sound like breaking glass when I hit it is pretty badly cracked. This thread is making me think about making a "lid" out of it.
Thanks for the reminder. The TOMB is really helpful for stuff like that.

Beater cymbal
LidOp:
Years ago, one friend had a really bad cymbal. I don't remember if it was
cracked, but it was kind of thin and warped and generally beat up. He
wanted to get rid of it, but I talked another drummer into a "demo" before
it got tossed out. Since the logo and the model were long worn off (or
never had one to begin with?), I'm curious who made it and what model it
was, because it didn't have much sustain and had the most cutting
*CRANG* I've ever heard.
When the second guy gets back from Iraq, I'll have to ask if that cymbal
ever got thrown out... Oh, but I made it up to him years later by dumpster-
diving for an old metal school fire-alarm bell for his kit...

In my youth I once played a backyard party and the drummer forgot his kick drum. He set the kit up against the garage door and used the door as the "head" of the drum.Snarl 12/8 wrote:I read somewhere that Iggy Pop was a drummer before he was in the Stooges and that he used a steel trash can as a kick drum. It worked pretty good. Only problem was he spent the entire night faceing the garage door when the rest of us were turned the other way. He missed everything.
