The Bent Sm57 Trick

Post by caution767 » Tue Mar 31, 2009 6:19 pm

Hey everyone I posted a cool trick of how to get an sm57 in tight drum micing situations with a little modification. You can see it at http://musformation.com/2009/03/flying.php

Can you just post the trick/tip here instead of trying to spam us over to your site?

Plus, no disrespect, but can anyone recommend pulling a mic apart and taping it back together, the way one wants it, with electrical tape instead of the case in which it came? I'm not an electronics master, by any means, but I do understand the importance of shielding and protecting connections from both interference and dirt. As I said, no disrespect; I'd like to hear more about this. Cheers, Andrew

i cant post illustration on the tape op message board id be happy not to spam(plus it is not spam when it is relevant info IMO) , I have been doing this for ten years and never have had a problem with shielding, I agree in theory it sounds like a terrible idea but having A/Bed it a million times with a regular 57, looks at it on audio analysis software I am confident enough that despite the logic that it should be a bad practice, I have seen no extra bleed or gotten any more noise/interference, I will post audio for the next blog and some analysis graphs.

Of course, the most important thing in audio is, if it works, it works. I didn't mean to disparage. I'd be interested to try it. I'm still used to making the drummer deal with a 57 or a d224, but, I also believe very strongly in making the drummer feel comfortable. If I can get the snare mic out of his/her way, I'll do it. Thanks for bringing this up. I might seem like an a@@hole, but I wouldn't be on this forum if I weren't trying to learn from those around me. Cheers, and thanks for casting new light on drum micing; something that needs to be done. Andy

You can still find SM56s on ebay. Easier than ripping apart your 57s.

Or even better use an EV 408/468, or ATM23he, mics that actually sound good!

I just took my N/D 468 off my snare. It's too bassy on snare for my taste. Where do you put it to get it to sound good on snare?

oh and look?

Jesse, that trick is a good idea. I wouldn't have thought to do that!

Tony Visconti mentioned this trick back in his TO interview.

That is a good trick. More live soundguys need to know about this one...and speaking of grumpy people (kiiiiiiddddding...well sort of), some pretty grumpy responses to what appears to be a well intended post.
What exactly is so offensive about clicking a link? People add them here all the time without reproach.
The idea itself is resourceful, quick n dirty, and reversible...and way easier than waiting 3-4 weeks for your ebay 56 to arrive in the mail (which doesn't look much shorter than a reg 57 anyhow, let alone the periscope 57 this trick yields).

Well I'll have you know that mine was once sung/spat into by one of Crosby, Stills and Nash... the ebay auction said so, so there!

I'd like it for that. I dig gear with a little history. My new 2-track came from Media Sound!

I just did this to one of my 57s for my gig on Saturday... too 5 mins!

Thanks for the information, I feel like an idiot for not thinking of that 15 years ago!
