Single 10" speaker cabinet for Ampeg SVT?

Post by decocco » Sat Apr 04, 2009 12:29 pm

I want to run my Ampeg SVT into a single 10" speaker cabinet. Has anyone tried this? Does this sound feasible? I love the sound of the SVT into it's 8x10 cab, but I want something way smaller (and lighter, quieter) just for recording. I prefer bass cabinets with 10" speakers to those with 15" speakers. Has anyone tried this before? Does anyone have an idea of a driver and cabinet to use?

how many watts is the output of the SVT? aren't they like 350w?

there's no way you can drive just one 10" that's handling that kind of power.

a 4x10 might be the closest bet.

otherwise, the amp's just a monster, and it'll really do damage to just one 10" speaker.

you might be ok just finding a 10" that's rated at around 100w or more - and make sure you play it at a low volume -

but the magic of the SVT is all that power driving all those speakers and pushing all that wattage (to me) -

you should totally try a fender bassman. 40w. beautiful.

I'm wondering of one of those Piranha cabs would do the trick. I was just checking them out again and they have 5" high excursion drivers that can handle 125watts each. So a 4x5 of that shit might work. Their web site says they sound amazing.

You get that "bunches of speakers powered by lots of watts" effect.

There are 10" speakers (PA style) made by Celestion, SICA (Jensen), Eminence, and others that are rated above 300 watts. Load a 1x10 cab with one of those and you could safely run the SVT into it. I'm pretty sure it isn't going to sound like the 8x10 though... And the head will still weigh 1600 pounds.
uh... what??

That looks very interesting. I gotta check that out.

I might just try that. I don't really expect it to sound like an 8x10, It's more of an experiment, I guess. Any suggestions on where to buy a good, unloaded 10" speaker cab?

I have! Those things are sexy sounding! However, they are expensive, and I already own the SVT, so I thought I might just try to do something different with it.

A Schroeder mini 10 cab should do the trick, it can handle that much power into a single 10.

Make sure you don't use an exact 10" replacement for the 8x10, as those are 32ohm.

One more question. Does anyone know where I can buy a cabinet that would fit a single 10" speaker and is not ported? Those Schroeder cabs look cool, but they're ported and have a tweeter. I have an aversion to tweeters and ports. Thanks for all the info so far!

I know you just said no ports and you want 10" but here's another thought.

Build yourself an EV TL-806 cab and put an EV 12L in it.

http://archives.telex.com/archives/EV/B ... 0Plans.pdf

http://www.srl.utu.fi/~tke/MesaBoogie/L ... 2L-eds.pdf
The 12L can handle hellof wattage.

It's a very cheap and easy cab to build and as compact a 1x12 as you're likely to get. There's mod they suggest (where you block part of the port) that gets you even lower bass response.

I've got two of these that I use for bass and guitar and I love 'em.

Here they are ready made. Although it doesn't look like you can get them with the 12L any more.

mojo might have one - they do requests, too:

i'm totally sure you can simply order a 1-10" cabinet and tell them to make it a closed back just like you like it.

I'd have to guess that if you're pumping a lot of wattage thru a closed back cabinet you're going to tear even a speaker rated at 350 watts, but I'm no expert.

Thanks for the info, guys. That EV cab does look pretty nice, but that speaker is 8 ohm. I would just need to find a good 4-ohm speaker. I've used 12" speaker cabinets on bass and liked them, so I might give that a try.

Why do you need a 4Ohm? That's gonna make your amp put out even more wattage. If your amp can handle 8 or even 16 I think that's a better bet for this application.

I want a 4 ohm speaker because the SVT requires a 4 ohm load. I know it's still going to be plenty loud, but that's okay. I'm gonna build that EV cabinet, it looks pretty simple. Snarl, did you build your EV TL-806's or did you buy them already built? I've never built a speaker cabinet, and I'm wondering what kind of wood might be best to use for the bracing.
