I am still using the method described in my earlier post.
And as to hardware reverbs, I only have and sometimes use a Lexicon MX400.
Also hooked up digitally, but via the two SPDIF connectors, one to and from each of my Digi 192 converters' digital cards.

6 years later?! Awesome. Yes, go for it. I'd say, 1) try it with software only first to see if it works before spending on something like the apollo and 2) consider a dedicated VST host instead of loading a full fledged DAW. There are several free options available for both PC and Mac.
