ut-oh! need help troubleshooting a delta 1010

i was setting up today for a session tomorrow and went to record to test drum sounds... my delta 1010 is pushing massive amounts of fizzy, crackly hum through to my daw. i can unplug all the inputs from it and it still happens, which means it's between the interface and the computer. my other interface functions properly, but i need them both! the strangest part is that the sound is different on each channel. track one is honky, track two sizzly, etc. what the hell is going on? anyone have this happen to them? thanks in advance for the words of wisdom.

Does it still happen if you unhook the cable from the PC (25 pin cable)

Does the -10 +4 switches make the sound different?

Have you changed anything on your PC lately? Reseat the PCI card.

Dont rule out changes you have made to drivers/software. I had a bad USB driver that caused distortion in just one channel.

it stops when i unhook the cable and it stops when i unhook the power.
the -10 +4 switch makes the signal flicker for a moment, but then it's the same.
i have not changed anything on the computer.
i will try reseating the PCI card.
i will also try reinstall the m-audio drivers.

That dont sound good. Do you have another DB 25 to 25 cable you can try? The converters are in the external box, hope you dont have an issue with it.

i don't have another cable, but i've tried everything else. still not working...

but something strange has been happening.

over the last few hours the bogus signal has gone down from right up to 0 dBfs to about -30dB.
now, i lost power the other night. there was no storm so i don't know why i lost power. i just know that my computer was off and my alarm clock didn't wake me up because it was flashing 12:00.

could this be some sort of residual static charge that is slowly working itself out? it sounds implausible, but i've been watching some star trek tng lately and that's probably rotting my brain.

any other tips?

the emergency level has gone down since i can borrow a friend's interface for tomorrow, but i'd still like to solve the case of the buzzing delta!

Take it out of the rack, lightly tap on it on each side. Does the noise get worse/better. You may have a loose connection.

The power outtage you had may have zapped it.

I dont think static is your issue.

Twice I've had similar problems with my Delta 1010. Both times it was a cap in the power supply that had died. If you are willing to open your Delta 1010 up you can often tell if you have a bad cap by literally sniffing around. Smell all the black barrel shaped components (a little over 1cm tall and .7cm in diameter). If one of them smells different, a kinda burnt electronics smell, then it is probably bad. You can also look for a bulging or exploded top to one of those caps. This is also a likely sign that you've found your problem.

If you find a bad cap, it is a pretty easy fix for someone with okay soldering skills. I've done it twice to my Delta 1010 now. Lately I've been turning my off my Delta 1010 when I'm not using it, and that seems to have helped me from blowing more caps.

If it turns out to be a bad cap, replace it with one of a higher voltage rating. That may keep you from having to do this more than once.
