what is SLM? st louis music co? i thought that was the shite company that ruined ampeg. aka "crate"?RefD wrote:i've been using an SLM sealed-back 2x12" since 1988 and it's been pretty solid.trodden wrote:Closed back.RefD wrote:for a 4x12, i would got vintage 30s in the top half and greenbacks in the bottom half.
2x12 would depend on whether it's open or closed back.
i know this isn't really answering properly, but i just had to chime in.

Just AB'd my questionable "marshal" 4X12 with my roommate's Genz Benz 2X12 G flex. damn the genz benz had a lot of punch in the low end.. something was wierd with the mids, but i think i may have liked the 2x12 more.. It definitely was just as loud!
worth noting: it seems that sealed cabs with dampening material inside are a bit more focused and less resonant.
also, fewer speakers often equals more detail in the mids and less weirdness in the top end.
guitar cabinets: remarkably different?

no, LOUD did that...just like they did to Mackie and EAW and Crate (which didn't suck when they started out in the late 70s, BION) as well as scads of others.trodden wrote:what is SLM? st louis music co? i thought that was the shite company that ruined ampeg. aka "crate"?RefD wrote:i've been using an SLM sealed-back 2x12" since 1988 and it's been pretty solid.trodden wrote:Closed back.RefD wrote:for a 4x12, i would got vintage 30s in the top half and greenbacks in the bottom half.

St. Louis Music bought them in '85 and got down to the job of buggering things up starting in the 90s, tho.
mercifully, my cab pre-dates that.

I would have to say that a 2x12 is a little better for clean than a 4x12.
The 4x12 will sometimes be more efficient due to having 4 driver not 2. There is also the fact that having 4 drivers cause lobing and phasing and a indistinctness to the sound. This is the tone of stacks of course. To a large extent 4x10 and 8x10 bass cabs do this too.
It can sound slightly chorussy or muddy when compared to a 2x12 or 1x12.
I think for clean guitar my ultimate setup would be either a JC120 or a Traynor YGL 3 with a boogie 2x12.
I also used to get a good clean new wavey tone from a boogie 4x10 and a Traynor YBA3 "Custom Special"
The old tube traynors are derivative of the old-old fenders. So in my book they cant be beat for clean guitar. Plus they are built better than a fender!
whatever you do dont buy a Jackson cabinet.
They were blowing those things out at GC back in the 90's for like I dunno $10?
They suck ass and are only good if you are doing a perfromance where you want to set a cabinet on fire. I think the carpet covering would soak up a lot of gasoline.

One of my cabs has that combo. Sounds great. I usually mic-ed the v30, but sometimes the g12.trodden wrote:posters with the avatar 2X12's, what speakers do you have in them? anyone do the combo of the vintage 30 and the G12H? that might be cool, but annoying when it comes down to "which speaker does the sound person mic?"
My other cab is the 'vintage' model with 2 Celestion Blues.

Man, that brings back an embarrassing memory. I toured with a band that had a Gibson sponsorship and almost every show they would pull out the cheapo Epiphone SG at the end and light it on fire or throw it around. Half the time the stage crew would just make fun of the idea as soon as they saw me pull it out of the case. "Oh, so you're gonna play the REAL Les Paul for an hour and then 'just happen' to switch to an Epiphone beater with ONE MORE SONG left? I wonder what's going to happen? *snicker, snicker* "whatever you do dont buy a Jackson cabinet.

As someone who owns a 65 reissue Twin Reverb, let me tell you: I have NEVER had to turn my amp past 4 or 5 to be heard. It is loud as shit and keeps up with half stacks EASILY. I actually get comments on how LOUD and how CLEAN my amp sounds while still sounding harmonically rich.
85 class AB tube watts is loud as shit. period.

Chris, by this do you mean running a cab out of the ext. speaker plug so both the main speakers and the cab are combining forces?thecheat wrote:Very Breifly,

i promise it, with almost any cab, will make your bandmates cry. Which may be what you are looking for. we dont record with it anywhere past 2 or 3

dont skimp on a good cabinet. i had an amp built for me a while back (it sucked and has scared me away from custom ordering anything ever again), but the guy built me a 1X12 cabinet with a Weber Blue Dog, a speaker i know i love since i already have one in my old fender. anyway, the amp was not great but the cabinet was AWFUL. i would plug the head into my fender amp speaker and the difference was crazy. Go with AVATAR. i hear nothing but good things and they arent that much $$$. if you want it to stay clean longer, go with the 30 watt speakers. but just me, i cant stand it when a twin is that loud and still clean. it starts to hurt. if you use some 15 watt speakers, it should be much warmer and pleasing sounding, get some nice breakup a little sooner. the twins are just too bright for my blood though.
waaaaaaaam...doggy.
