The Tape Op Ribbon a few years down the road, how U use it?

Post by nestle » Wed May 06, 2009 11:01 am

Well it been a few years now and I still own 3 of those group buy Tape Op Ribbons.
Though I use one all the time on mono drum overhead I discovered the killer application (for me at least). Recording live. I like to have one up close stage left, one stage right and one over the drums. If you have a nice room you can get great ambiance from the figure 8 pattern, I recorded 2 show's like this and really love them for whatever they cost (like under $100) also great on vibes.

here is a show I recorded of my experimental band LYDSOD at Issue Project Room in NYC posted on the WFMU free music archive.

what do you use the Tape OP Robbon for?

I really like them for room mics in a blumlein pair.

And they're pretty killer on hand percussion: tambourines, glockenspiel, shakers and the like. Flattering in a way neither dynamics or condensers are.

i'll say it -

i got one used here off the forums -

and i wish i had 5 more!

i use 'em anywhere i'd imagine using a rca 77 -

which is pretty much everywhere except as a kick and snare mic.

toms, overheads, guitar, upright bass, vocals, percussion, organ - it's been absolutely everywhere.

it's my swiss army knife - always sounds exactly how i want it to!

guitar amps, things like dobro/fiddle/accordion, and for a certain retro vocal sound.

Overheads, room, vocals, brass, harmonica, acoustic and electric guitar, wherever a ribbon should sound good. I put cinemag trannys in mine and never looked back. Sound great.

What Cinemag's did you swap in?

I have a pair of those tapeop ribbons that I got used and they are kinda off the radar for me.. maybe I should pull them out again and give them another chance.. especially since I have some new pres to experiment with. I think the Purple Pants might be just the ticket..
