Where to find free sound effects

Hey People,

I didn't know which forum to put this in.

Can somebody recommend a web site (or somewhere) from which I could get some OK sounding sound effects? I need "woods" sounds (crickets, frogs, owls, etc.) and old-timey "town" sounds (horse hooves, doors slamming, dogs barking, people murmering). This is for my kids' play at school, so there's zero budget. The school is a registered non-profit. I'm not doing anything commercial here, but I'd like to create a pretty cool audio "backdrop" for the production.

On http://www.sounddogs.com you can download the MP3 preview files. They ain't the best quality, but some sound pretty good.

I just did a few genre plays with my students as old radio programs. Because of the same circumstances you listed (no money), I had them do all sound effects from materials in the classroom. Showed a few youtube videos on foley artists, including Ben Burtt (who made lightsaber sounds, by accident no less). They then had some time to roam around my class and experiment with all the sounds and see what they could create. I brought in laptop with Sonar and mixer to do basic tracking and showed them pitch shifting and other high-interest signal processing that could make their sounds more believable (ever want to grab a kid's attention, show them a reverb pushed way too far). Of course we took time to change their voices and do all the silly stuff they wanted. The plays were great, burned onto CD and handed out to parents, and then recorded musical accompaniment and commercial jingles that were included in the radio programs. Might be worth a consideration.

Your local library.

I got some mine at the Boston Public Library, they have dozens of BBC free use sound effects CDs in many catagories. Your local may, too.
