a little final grit.

Post by brightpavilions » Wed May 06, 2009 10:32 pm

My background in recording my bands when I'm on the controls comes in 4 & 8 track cassettes. When i upgraded from the 8 track years ago I went digital. So I've been PT LE ever since.

My question is now, I've got a solid recording of my band that I feel really good about. But there's always that "pristine-ness" that I want to tone down a bit. You know, add a bit of that cassette garbage back in.

The PSP Vintage Warmer plug has helped but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas what I could apply/add/manipulate to a final mix, prior to mastering that could dirty it up a bit. Yes, I'm trying to incorporate the some of the lo-fi parts of the cassette that I loved into the digital realm that I've come to love as well.

Thanks!

Have a look at Michaels Kingston's RetroBand. It's designed to add dirt to a signal.

Oh I love this plug-in, but I don't think it can be added to a Master fader?

It's interesting but it's only available as VST.

you can do that crinkling tape effect to add flutter and wow and mix that back into the signal. there is also that lo-fi plug in for pro tools 8, but i don't have that yet so i dont know. there is also that vinyl plug in that is free and you can add rumble and all the things that people hated about vinyl back when it was the only playback medium. i cant remember where i read about that first thing i mentioned.. ill look it up and repost. im way spaced right now.
the massey tape head plug is good. the crinkling tape is what i wuld say though cuase its more involved. the best tasting tomatoes are the ones you labor over.

Create a hardware send.
send it to a "crinkled tape." (crinkle that tape!)
Bring it back onto a record enabled track.
Bring the level of that track up to the level you want in the song. This was originally put however many milliseconds you want after so that its a funky delay effect, but you dont have to do that.

I used to think that too, but I've found that if you add it before you get going and mix through it rather than trying to strap it on near the end of the mix it works out MUCH better.

It might sound cooler to not run the entire mix through some synthetic analog thingy. You've got the digital pristineness, put the drums and vox through something gritty or grungy or everything but the vox. Or just the room mic in the bridge. I dunno, it's the year 2000?!

line the mix through a pro vla set to not compress with sovtek 12AX7's?

I find the sovtek's to add a general grittines to most anything. Microphonics baby.

Send me your mixes and I'll run them off 1/4" 2-track. A vintage formulation like Scotch 250 would be great.

Then have them mastered off tape by someone like Dave McNair at Masterdisk in New York.

I've put Tape Head on the master fader and had great results. I usually put it right before my dither. Try it! The demo is free

I would take him up on this offer if I were you, LOL. Great opportunity.
