Recording Pre-Production journal.

Post by Justin Foley » Thu May 07, 2009 11:32 am

I've started keeping a journal that tries to document the decisions we (the band that I am in) will be making as we record our next release. There is an important deadline that tracking will be done by the beginning of July. Even so, I'm taking the time to try to capture and explain (with sound samples) what we're thinking of.

Anyway, most folks probably wouldn't care about this, but some on this board might. Here's what to expect:

- We're a 2 peice with vox, guitar, bass and drum machine.
- The music is aggressive, and the recording aesthetic is "you're in the room with the band as they're playing", for the most part.
- The final product will be tracked on a 1 inch 8 track.
- There's a limited amount of outboard gear and mic choices, probably not that different from the average semi-equipped home studio.

If you're interested in following along (and I'd love to hear what others think of our choices and process), please pay a visit:

Start with the 3/20/09 Overview post and work your way up.

Thanks,

PS - Since this is more about the decision-making process and less about the final product, I figured it was best for this forum. If folks think it's better in "Listen to My Stuff", that's fine.

Very interesting stuff, it's cool listening to all the different options and seeing how my opinions differ to yours in some areas.

Interesting! Thanks for posting the link. I too like that you've included clips of the different options as you try them out. Very insightful and it really makes me want to record! Good luck with your project. :D

Glad to see that you liked it. I'm also glad to hear that there are apparently different areas of interpretation of what sounds best; I'd be curious (not in an arguing way) to hear what you preferred and why.

This has been handy in another way. I was speaking with a band tonight that I'm going to record and said - hey, you should listen to this and figure out what you do and don't like.

Anyway, finished up the drums last night and will work on bass guitar next.

Bumping this because we're getting ready to make another record.

Here's the archive.

Here's the intro to the new post.

More to come in the weeks ahead.
