NEXT Analog Recording Workshop @ Welcome To 1979 (Apr 10/11)

Post by cjmnash » Thu May 14, 2009 9:24 am

Welcome To 1979 Studio (an all analog recording studio in Nashville, TN- www.welcometo1979.com) is pleased to announce that we're hosting another intimate weekend analog recording workshop April 10th and 11th. We've put on a few of these in 2009 (with much success) and we're continuing the fun in 2010!

Analog recording is easy, fun and exciting! Over a two-day workshop, we'll dispel the myths and misconceptions of analog recording by creating a relaxed, fun atmosphere for recording enthusiasts to learn about the wide world of analog. We will then apply basic and advanced analog recording techniques in a real world session setting at a pace designed for learning.

Today?s DAWs were born from analog recording techniques- the similarities between analog and digital systems will be explained and examined in hopes of giving you a better understanding of the recording process as a whole.

We'll be limiting the number of attendees to 12 to keep this very hands on and interactive.

Day 1 will cover:
Basic signal flow of Welcome To 1979
Analog tape machine fundamentals
Analog reverbs explained and demonstrated (chambers, plates, springs, delays)
Tape machine alignment introduction & overview (what/when/why/elevated levels)
Mixing basics (using a 2" tape of previously recorded tracks)
Setup for recording session on Day 2

Day 2 will involve:
Recording a band in the studio + implementing tons of analog tips & tricks
Doing analog punches
Doing analog comping of tracks
Discuss similarities between digital and analog methods
Discuss differences between digital and analog methods
How to apply what you've learned in the analog world to your setup
Documentation!

Lunch will be provided each day, the cost of the entire workshop is a modest $200.

A special "Day 3" will be offered to 4 people that will be a full-tilt analog alignment day where alignment techniques (repro, sync, record, bias and even head alignment) will be thoroughly explained and demonstrated. Then each person will align a machine from top to bottom. Day 3 is an additional $200.

Email me at cym@mindspring.com with any questions, and for more information. You can learn more about Welcome To 1979 at www.welcometo1979.com

Thanks!

Sounds ace, and I actually looked up flight details / costs :D
Wasn't too pricey, but I couldn't make the dates work over that weekend ... one day!

I'd be curious to hear how this turns out. I was thinking of doing some workshops in NYC at our newly available studio (see this thread for details: http://messageboard.tapeop.com/viewtopic.php?t=64454)

Have you considered doing workshops on other topics? It seems like people are relatively interested in this type of thing.

For additional summer fun, they should bring in a hand-pump keg of Fuller's IPA.

I prefer the Fuller's ESB.

I feel like a Nashville 1979 studio should have Schlitz or something, though.

man- i hope you can get your schedule figured out; it'd be great to have you attend!

It's going to cover a wide range of topics, M/S mic'ing , old school techniques and how to integrate/duplicate them in today's DAW setups, etc, etc.

Since it's going to be such a small group (12 people) i'll take time to discuss our backgrounds/recording setups so we can cater the discussions/topics and make everything more relevant for the group, at the end, we'll discuss what they'd like to learn at the next workshop in hopes of setting up a dedicated "advanced workshop" for that particular group. working on a "custom workshop series" type thing.

Another reason why MANY of my clients would love your place. I'll be bringing my own beer in November, though.

Might stop by tonight for the vinyl shindig. I've got a copy of The Incredible String Band's "Hangman's Beautiful Daughter" which I got directly from Al Kooper...
