Any suggestions for a unique/cheap guitar?

Post by magritte » Fri May 15, 2009 9:34 pm

My favorite bands and guitar sounds are Velvet Underground, Dinosaur Jr, GBV, Devo, etc. Most of those bands play fenders, but I'm looking for something to call my own--any guitars with similar sounds that aren't very well-known? Looking for good pickups, action, and a vintage look (though it can be new). Any suggestions would be great, thanks.

Reverend guitars. I own their Buckshot. It's awesome. I also am primarily a Fender player, and own a Strat, Tele, and Jaguar (+ P-Bass).

Nice, I will check them out.

What about a Hagstrom Swede--has anyone played these?

I'm still waiting for the vintage Peavey surge of affection.

I may be waiting a while.

But I think they're cool.

'specially the basses.

and their crazy star shaped metal looking guitars from the '80's.

i forgot, try and find an older(mid 90s) ibanez talman. that or the jetkings that they have now are vibey and sound good from the factory. if you want, guitarfetish.com has the GFS retrotron series pickups to give way to a gretsch, rickenbacker type sounds.

yamaha has made some cool fender-like guitars through the years. i have an sg2 that is similar to a jaguar. these are pricey now, but they recently made the sgv series. these are pretty cool and not too common. or grab this 80's yamaha sc300t for $200 from cretermusic.com...

+1 on the Danelectros.

If you want a Danelectro with better hardware, check out http://jerryjonesguitars.com - I own a longhorn bass and 2 baritones at the moment (1 with a Bigsby!)

Get a Kapa. They usually go for about $300 used. They're a little known company that was around in the 60s in Maryland. The Continental has a jaguar-ish look. They have thin, Hagstrom-like necks and German-made (Hofner) humbuckers. They also made a tear-drop shaped Vox copy called the Minstrel. Sonic Youth has a couple Kapas.

+1 for a Danelectro. I have a 12 string and a DC59 and I love them. I also like a couple Schecter guitars, I know what you a thinking, they are nu-metal guitars, but the Hellcat and the Ultra III are pretty sweet. You could probably find either used around $250.

Guys, those danelectros...are they uber "twangy"? that's always been my impression of danelectro. they look great, but i imagine everything i play would sound like the byrds.
