Help! Mystery part?

Post by paulrichards7 » Sun May 17, 2009 4:56 am

Hi, Ive just started volunteering at Percy community center, Bath. We teach children between the ages of 13-17 to make digital music. There are 7 x M-Audio Oxygen 8 V2 keyboards. Unfortunately 2 of these have been broken. I managed to fix one with some duct tape but the other as you can see from the picture is quite badly damaged.

Can you guys you tell me what the lead cylinder parts are at the bottom of the pic and Ill see if they have something similar in our local Maplins
Thanks for your time and help
Paul

Those just look like ferrite beads, and marked as inductors. Should just be a little ceramic/ferric (iron-bearing, hence having magnetic properties) with a wire through the middle. If so, you ought to be able to replace the wire instead of buying new ones.

They're called "ferrite beads."

I'd be wary of getting rid of them - they're probably there for a reason, like keeping noise from inside the unit from getting out on those connectors.

I'd take a closer look at the damaged ones...most ferrite beads are truly just the bead. You have to run your own wire through them. So the old one may have been sheared off, but you might be able to just run a new wire through them.
