Here's a funny video of a non-automated mix on analog....

Post by cjmnash » Wed Jun 03, 2009 9:26 am

Ok, so there I am minding my own business working on a mix, from 2" analog to 1/4" analog, and I'm doing it by hand 'cause my console doesn't have automation....and, as you'd guess, I'm making my fair share of mistakes....which is all part of the gig, until I realize the artist is filming it! hee hee hee.

When I got the footage from her I laughed my ass off, so I put together this little montage so everyone can poke fun at me:

It's the first one, and if you want to hear the final product just go to:

(this is the same band that caught my headphones on fire!)

Enjoy!

Glad to see I'm not the only one.
I usually rock the "million pieces of masking tape" automation when I do board mixes. I tape off the top and bottom of my fader moves so I can't overshoot the mark in the heat of the moment.

my console has a light-colored paint, so i just use pencil marks-- trust me, there's a ton of them on each fader! little hash marks everywhere!

mixing as a performance is such a beautiful thing to see. Having spent months and months mixing my band's album in the computer this looks like so much more fun.

Watching that makes me realize how much I'm spoiled on automation. Whenever I make the upgrade away from one integrated digital mixer/hard drive recorder to separate pieces of higher quality I know that luxury is probably going bye bye. I should probably start practicing without it now, ha.

I've only ever mixed ITB.

This looks frustratingly awesome.

Maybe one day...

Love it...classic stuff. Especially the "misses the LAST mute of the song" spot. I know the feeling... :hammer:

If there are way too many moves I'll often mix in sections and splice everything together. It's kind of cheating but I'm only one man with 2 hands.

great video! Seeing that reminds me of how much skill and memorization it took before so much was done ITB.

Man it's been a while since I've done some real mixing...but I've been meaning to pull my dusty 4 track out to transfer some old recordings. Maybe that'll get me by until I can afford a new console.

from the lucky guy who got to master the 1/4"...

What a treat to master from the analog mixes. Pushing the tape a little on that Ampex was just the right thing. Real dynamic range for a change! The Fireman's Daughter writes, plays and sing great. Hey Chris, next time how 'bout some leader between cuts! :)
