Thanks for all the good advice,!! I'm going with Tony's suggestion and recommending an SM7B [vocals/bass/electric guitar] and also 2 cad E70 multipattern sdc.s[ acoustic/percussion/oh's] and a couple of sm57's. [more vocals/snare/electric guitar]
He has Roland v drums [not too bad sounding, they've come a long long way with electric drums and in a NYC apartment they're a brilliant idea]

Yeha I figure why spend $200 for something that you're going to need to upgrade in the not too distant future.
He's going to save up $$$ until he can be in the $1000-$1500 range and get a decent LDC.. and the sm7b will always be a solid mic in the collection.

New secret weapon mic: Violet Black Knight. Around $400. REALLY clear. Very low self noise. You guys (fellow tape op'ers) have got to try this mic! Blows Studio Projects, MXL, etc out of the water.

So says me.

I am in new york al the time and it has nothing on the bay area for agressive angry drivers. It does have a lot more cabs than any other american city, and those guys will always drive more ...proactively than a regular driver.
But in the SF bay area EVERYONE drives nuts. And our traffic jams are getting to epic proportions.
But more to the point,
Oktava 219 or 319. They sound realy good, and after you get them Joly-modded they are serious contenders.
I would even say ditch the CAD idea and go for some MC012's.
I cant stand cheap CAD mics though.
The AT 4033 and its cousins are all great. I used to revile AT on the basis of a few cruddy dynamics I bought at GC back in the day. The 4033 changed my mind.
The other alternative to the SM7b would be a sennheiser 421 or 441.
They are truly classic mics that have a number of uses, percussion, vocals, amps etc. I would dare say the 441 can fill in for a LDC in many situations.

I would suggest the AT3035 or AT2035. We often reach for one of our 3035s, instead of mics supposedly superior in performance. The 3035s deliver.

Best.

Love the 3035's. They're cheap right now because they don't make them anymore. I picked up a PAIR for $200 shipped...new. They don't sound quite as good as the AT4050, but they are very close. I use them on everything.

From where did you get such a great deal?
I could use a pair of ok LDC's to take on the road.

Thirded. Really one of the most viable options in the $200 range

I forth that (quadruple it?). I have two 4033's and could easily put a third to work when recording a band live. Good on elec guitar, acoustic guitar, bass, toms, kick drum, overheads, room mic, some vocalists.

My unmodded MXL 2001 is my go to LDC. I got it NEW for $15 at a GC sale. I want to get another to have a pair, but I can't bring myself to pay the $79 they seem to go for used on eBay and stores and stuff. To me, they cost $15 new, y'know? If your buddy bought one, down the road he could mod it and have a stellar mic.
