the presidential podium mic?
IIRC thats a pair of SM57's with the locking windscreens.
That was actually an answer to an audio production class I took like 20 years ago. But I am confident, that like much else in politics, little has changed.

I appreciate all the suggestions - helps narrow the choices - at least it feels like I am getting closer to a choice...

Instead of "Presidential mic" I should have said news reporter mic - it is an Electro-Voice 635A.

Why do they always stereo mic a mono source?

its not stereo, its redundant.
Cant have the leader of the free world's mic cut out when he is saying

If you saved just a little more, you could open yourself up to a lot more possibilites on the used market.

Some mics that come to mind....

1st 3 choices for me would be....

Beyer M160 - used or call Full Compass
Sennheiser 441 - used for around $350-400
Josephson C42 - around $300 used, stellar mic

also good....

Shure KSM141 - SDC w/ omni, card. patterns
Shure KSM44 - Multi-pattern LDC, very useful mic, usually around $400-500 used
Shinybox ribbon
SM7

I'd be interested to try a pair of those Cascade mics as well.

Late to the party, get a pair of KEL HM-1's. They are quite lovely and quite cheap. http://www.kelaudio.com/hm1.html

Also underrated is the AudioTechnica ATM450..

seems to me that you are wanting a few conficting things in one mic.

it maybe hard to get (A) "transients, harmonics, sympathetic strings, and such," and a (B) "warm, rich sound. An attenuated or rolled-off high end is just fine. "

(A) sounds like you want a condersor for

(b) sounds like a dynamic or ribbon mic

in the dynamic category: a used SM7:
great voc smooth vocals - vintage sounding acoustics - punchy on kicks/snares - vintagey hihats - great on guitar cabs...

in the condensor category:a NT2
not a bad entry level all arounder - has a few patters and a pad and bass roll off

for acoustic guitar, for bass, and voice this mic is great:

buy the cheapest Apex 460 you can find around 100 dolls it doesn't even need to work.

then buy a CEK 12 capsule and BV11 output transfo on AAmicrophones 195 dolls and 45 dolls

add the replacement condo 10 $

that's 350 $ i know it's 100 more than what you said but it's really worth it, the result is just great probably as good as most 1000 $ mics on the market.

I am starting to agree with Recycled_Brains - re:saving a bit more for better. Especially in that a lot of the suggestions are higher than initial price range I was thinking and I see where joninc is right in that I am looking for several (perhaps conflicting) characteristics that might be better represented by several mics.

"The Decider" reference by calaverasgrandes made me laugh - love Jon Stewart. Unless the reference was in Fox News reverence and serious pining for days of old.

Hi Tim, you might want to consider our CM47fet which is very reasonable.

You can read the review on our CM47 in the last issue of Tape Op. The CM47fet is OMNI or CARD and in a nice sounding room OMNI quite often yields more consistent results with acoustic guitar.

for the vibe you describe and the $$ range you defined:

Heil PR30 for sure for sure...there, I said it twice.

...or I'd try to lay my hands on Scodiddly's Alice mic no doubt.

I love the AT stuff and OktavaMod stuff always, but you want warm, rich, color, and character. The PR30 and Alice do all of that at once in a big way. Both mics provide absolutely Glowing Mids.

The Rode NT1A is a great mic for under $300. Not a Neumann, but for the bread a great mic for some voices and acoustic guitar...
