Come, Come - $250 for mic - what would you buy?
And I?ve been doing the research ? reading reviews and specs, on-line posts, and thumbing through nearly complete run of Tape Op. So many choices and variables ? I think I know what I?d buy with $1000 but in the $200-$300 there is a lot. Have read the sticky on mic recommendations.
The parameters of what I am looking for:
1) Record mainly acoustic guitar and bass - love transients, harmonics, sympathetic strings, and such,
2) Like warm, rich sound. An attenuated or rolled-off high end is just fine.
3) Mic with color or character is great,
4) Support of some odd, boutique, small run, or lone designer would be great if recommended by Tape Op member.
5) Use mixer preamps ? next in line for upgrade ? possibly to Twin-Finity,
6) Currently use vox mic and one like they use on presidential podium,

the rode ntk would work well for this. although, not my favorite mic should handle the bass better. a good solid ribbon would do you well if the pres in your board have enough gain.
overall, if your close mic'ing everything the sm7b is your best bet. for condensers, the spl for bas is going to be your main concern. adk makes the s7 mic in 3 flavors to cater to specific applications. something else to look at.

The cool thing about the RE10 is you can probably buy one AND have money for another cool mic in your budget.beefy wrote:Yeah the re 10's and 16's are electro voice and sound great on anything so if you ever wanted to record voice electric guitar drums you would have mics that sound good doing that to. If I was starting my collection over and only had a couple hundred bucks I would get a used RE10 and a used AT 4033. That's a pretty wide range of sound and applications, but the 4033 has not this "warm" you speak of. It's a bit more bright.
But, on the other hand I have continually lusted after the 4047 that someone else mentioned, for all the reasons it fits your purposes. It just costs a bit more, I see them used for about 400, most often.
