I noticed in one of your pictures that you have a your overheads covered with a rag of some kind. Is that just to protect the mic or does it serve some kind of other purpose?

Dude....

You're my Bizarro-world doppelganger who actually does the things I daydream about all day.

Wow.

Awesome.

just to keep out the dust since I keep them up there all the time. *Usually* I remember to take them off before I record.

just wanted to updated and say that I'm very pleased with the sound in the new studio. I've been doing some recording and so far its what I was hoping for. a nice "room" sound.

one of the first things I noticed when playing back some reference tracks is that my monitors suddenly had all this low end that I had not been hearing before in the small room! Even with lots of bass trapping I had to use a subwoofer to compensate for some of the lows before. Now I can hear those freqs more clearly w/o the sub. 8)

I still have some tweaking to do and will be hanging a few more absorption panels in strategic places but overall its been great. The construction process went very smoothly too and I can't say enough good things about the general contractor I hired to build this.

I'm curious how good the sound isolation is outside. Have you checked how loud things are outside of the studio?

Sound isolation is very, very good on the sides that have no windows - of course the windows and single door are the weak link. I knew this when I put them in. I constructed some "devices" that I can stuff into the windows when I need greater sound isolation (either keeping noise in or out of the studio). I've also worked on the door a little and sealed up some cracks a little tighter. Eventually I hope to find a heavy moving blanket or stage curtain that I can put over the door on a rod so I can move it out of the way when I need to use the door. Right now I have a gobo on wheels that I can slide in front of it to help some too. Or I may get crazy and attach some more "mass" to the door. The door is a nice solid mahogany door, however, it also has panels carved into it so it gets thinner in some spots. Maybe I should have gone with the foam core, steel door. What I really wanted was a steel clad, wooden door or an extra thick wooden door but I couldn't find one (in time to not hold up everything else).

anyway, the little bit of sound leakage has not really been a problem so far - either when drumming or when recording acoustic guitars and such. I also recently had a band rehearsal in there with full-out rock and roll guitars and my wife could not hear it in the house. so far so good.

here's the window things (crude but works well enough for now)

I'm definitely going to need to construct some burly window plugs for my new place.. they are the main sources of traffic noise.
