KM184 vs MK012 modded for piano/all around live use

Post by oldguitars » Fri Jul 31, 2009 11:33 am

So, aside from lot's o' recording, I am the audio coordinator at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. We need to expand our mic closet with some better SDC's. I have my own pair of KM184's which I really like as great all around mic, but I am thinking about the oktava mod Modified MK-012 MSP2.

Any thoughts?

We do LOTS of jazz and classical...

Stick with KM-184. They will never let you down or disappoint. They will serve the live recordings very well and are a known quantity if tour engineers come through and need to use your gear. They will hold their value. Mics that have to be modded to be any good....meh.

Yeah, I am thinking the same thing. Its just that the price is hard to resist and there is a new swivel head adapter that makes the oktava's really flexible...

If you can't afford the 184's try AT4051's.

I own both and think either would do nicely.

The 184 strikes me as having a richer midrange and a more aggressive top end. The 012 is softer and more mellow.
