Favorite Kick/Bass Microphone
Favorite Kick/Bass Microphone
I have always found AKG's D112 to be my favorite mic for kick drum (also good for a kick ass floor tom sound), and I was recently turned on to using it "backwards". I am in the market for more options though...Audio-Technica's discontinued ATM25 was recommended to me and I haven't been able to try it yet. What say you?

Ok.
What about condensors that are good for in front of the kick?

Depending on the session, any of the following are tried on the kick:cupidcome wrote:Ok.

-MXL V67g (front head, no hole, off axis, great thump really "blooms")
-MXL 990 (front head, slightly to the right or left of dead center, very tight sound)
These aren't condensers but they serve me well in certain settings
-sennheiser e609, (right up against the front head, no hole, off axis from dead center)
-stedman N90, (again, off axis from dead center, 1-2 inches away)

I've got an old EV N/Dym 868 kick mic that works quite well from time to time. Makes for a rather fat sound on a guitar cab, too! Not a condenser, though...
But, I use a D112 more than anything.

beyer tgx50, m88.
GT52 several feet in front of kick, pad on!(pad on the pre too!)
d12, 421.
on jazz kits I usually use a 57 or 56 on kick!
You generally dont want a lot of bottom end anyway on jazz combos.
If you get it just right you can hear the air of the kick.
D112 if its metal, punk or hard rock.

Too bad I havent worked very much lately, I would like to pick up another dynamic. Ev's are usually interesting if not great. At least they provide a nice counterpoint to the teutonic trio (Beyer, AKG and Sennheiser/Neumann).

I just got a 602. Trying it out for the 1st time on some hardcore stuff this weekend.Marc Alan Goodman wrote:sennheiser e602 kills everything else I've tried on rock kick drum. But as proven here everyone has their own taste.
First I just have to get the drummer to take his sleeping bag out of the kick.
