It depends on what sound you are after. If you want that "small upfront and dry" kinda thing, a smaller folk size acoustic can help get there. As for your standard dreadnought type, generally a solid Spruce top is the thing to look for for great tone but it can vary a lot. I have an old 70s Yamaha FG-160E that's no solid top and records extremely well. Very balanced but mellow due to it's age. It's beat up real good too and I think a beat up old acoustic might just sound better or make you think it sounds better anyway. Who knows. It's all subjective but I do like older guitars for recording mostly. I have heard some really nice sounding Seagulls myself also and they were new, so again, subjective. I was in love with a little Seagull Folk at store here awhile back but never heard it recorded.
