100% agreed. I prefer the sound that I can get with analog processing.

Yeah I really wish i could work OTB but neither of the studios I regularly work at have this capability...even if i had access to a summing box I'd be happier.

I'm finding this more and more. I had a bitch of a time finding studios in DC with a console. (I've got a project I'm doing up there this fall.) Fortunately, it looks like Inner Ear is gonna work out great, but everywhere else that has a console is like $800 a day.

Oh yeah, Inner Ear is pretty cool! The only other place I can think of in the DC area that has a console is Omega Recording studios; the A room has a Neve VR-60 with nuclear missile launch capability. It used to belong to Lucasfilm, if I remember right...anyway that place is probably mucho expensivo. +1 to them for being the first pro studio I ever visited!

Omega has a sweet smaller room with a great old babyshit colored API.

Call 'em up.

It may look like babyshit but babyshit doesn't usually have VCA fader automation...

I did. Was put on hold for ten minutes and every time the receptionist came back on the line, she had forgotten what I was calling about. After hearing similar stories from other folks and stupid shit like them constantly modifying their rates, I gave up on having any interest in that place. It was like dealing with a clown college.

Ah,
sorry to hear that.
They do operate a clown college out of that place in between real sessions.
Too bad 'cause that API room sounded great.

Yeah, I got excited about the consoles. They actually have more than one that I like working on.

I end up mixing OTB more often. I have the keys to a room with a 6000 G, and I use it as much as I can. My personal recording setup is minimal, and I do some on-location ITB sessions for friends (not just any client) who can't afford the room.

Unattended= ITB without exception.
Attended=start ITB, final OTB

Unattended ITB because the process of mixing has become very political. The bass players girlfriend thinks that his background vocals aren't loud enough? Guess what? You're goin back in to turn the sloppy mess up. Can't put the shit back in he dog. Everyone knows that "all you have to do is open the file up and "tweak" the track". It's expected now. I've spent too many days of my life resetting outboard gear to turn a syllable of a word up or down without compensation to continue to do so. I keep the mixes ITB to keep the brain in my skull.
Mixing "In The Box" beats the crap outta "Living" in A box

If I know the mixes I'm working on are going to be final, then I do a mix of ITB and OTB.

For all the OTB stuff, once the mix has been finalized and approves, I then record into my PT all the audio that went out and back in, so I have it all ITB for future reference.

Cheers
I'd rather mix oTB, but most 'O'th'time,
Whut he had said.
Harumph!
