Bassman Amp Kit Or Other?

Post by TV Lenny » Sat Oct 03, 2009 7:56 pm

I picked up a Weber 2x12 aged tweed cab which goes with a 5F6 chassis. Anyone recommend a good amp kit which I should consider building? I am open to just about any suggestions...doesn't have to be a Bassman. In fact, I would like something with possibly some verb.

Main requirements would be: great clean tone, nice breakup, well suited for rock and blues stuff. This amp will be played at home and studio. Simple tone stack is fine.

The speakers I have installed in the cab right now are Weber Blue Dogs. Wired for 16 ohm.

Thanks,
Tom

Watts Tube Audio at www.turretboards.com has various types of kits. I've never gotten any kits from him but I have used his generic turret boards on a lot of my projects and they are good quality. Maybe you can find something that would fit your needs there. He's reliable and has been in business for a number of years.
uh... what??

Based on your requirements, I would go for a 5E3 (Fender tweed deluxe) circuit amp before building a bassman. VERY nice clean tone, and great 6V6 breakup. From what I understand, it's a pretty simple circuit to build.

Thanks for the input guys! I'm in no rush so I will thoroughly research this. Kind of a Winter project. Anyone build a Weber kit? How are the Ceriatone amp kits? Are they quality parts?

Thanks,
Tom

BTW - I really like the idea of building a 5E3 type amp. That is what I'm leaning towards at this point.

If you've got an Epi Valve Junior lying around then have a look at this 5E3 conversion kit. Just waiting for spare cash to start mine:

If you're not trying to play loud enough for a live gig, go as small as possible. Fender Champ circuit, even. 5 watts is pretty damn loud.
